Hi! I’m Elyse Andrews, the founder of the Somerville Beat.

As the writer, editor and photographer behind the Beat, I’m using what I’ve learned in my decade-plus journalism career to intimately cover Somerville’s active food scene, its booming creative economy and everything in between. I landed in Somerville seven years ago and while I’ve loved it the whole time, it seems that there’s never been a better time to be here than right now.

The Somerville Beat is all about providing residents of the city and beyond with a local, in-depth perspective on the unique stories and events happening in town. Somerville is alive with innovative and passionate people working to build a strong community and we’re proud to be a part of that.

The Somerville Beat’s website was created by Mike Swartz, a founding partner of Web design and development firm Upstatement. It uses responsive design technology to deliver the highest-quality original content on every type of device you can think of.

This intersection of cutting-edge journalism and design, combined with the perspective of being a Somerville homeowner and Somerville Local First board member, means the Beat provides an experience readers won’t find anywhere else.

I hope you enjoy what you find here and thank you for reading!

See you around town,

P.S. Connect with the Beat on TwitterFacebook and Instagram to stay on top of the latest news, features and exclusive content! And you can always reach me by email at editor@somervillebeat.com.

  1. Hello Elyse,

I have just recently moved to Somerville (Winter Hill area) and I LOVE the area. I bumped into this site while looking for something to do this weekend and I am soooo excited that I did. I wanted to make a suggestion: Is there a way that you can have a calendar that we can add to our gmail calendars. It might be too much to ask, but it would be great to have automatic Somerville updates on my phone calendar.

If not, it’s fine. Still love the site! You’re doing an amazing job! =)
