When I started the Somerville Beat in 2012, I had no idea how much it would change my life. What started as a hobby blog morphed into my full-time (and often more) job. In the last three years, I’ve written more than 600 stories about Somerville, gotten deeply involved in the community through volunteer work, and met so many like-minded locals who often started out as interview subjects and became friends. When I launched the Beat, I wanted to create a space where I could write about something I loved, where the community could connect and Somerville could shine. I’ve done all that and now it’s time for something new.
With that said, the Beat is going to be changing, morphing from a full-time focus back to a side project that exists in parallel with my other work. What you can expect going forward are occasional posts. The calendar, weekend event picks posts and newsletter have all been retired. But all of the content I’ve published in the last three years–those 600 posts telling the story of Somerville during this special time–will remain on the site. You can still find me sporadically posting on the Beat’s Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
Thank you all so much for reading the Beat for the last three years and for voting it the Best Local Media in Scout Somerville’s 2015 Scout’s Honored Awards. I often say that I couldn’t, and wouldn’t want, to do this without you, and I truly mean it. The support of the community, the city, my advertisers and friends and family has made this journey such a joy. Deciding what to do with the Beat was difficult as I shift my focus and make room for a new adventure. It’s a huge part of my identity and I love it dearly. But it’s time to put my energy into helping people in a new way.
I’m excited to take my natural curiosity, investigative skills and love for storytelling, and apply them to those same businesses, events and organizations I’ve covered on the Beat as a communications consultant. I’ve received countless notes over the years from people I’ve written about thanking me for helping them tell their story. Now, I want to help them learn the skills I’ve acquired to attract attention to their businesses and grow them as I’ve grown the Beat.
