I’m not sure where I read about Cafe Indigo, located in Cocord, N.H., (NH Magazine, Yankee Magazine, Twitter?), but I knew the next time I drove north on I-93 around lunch time, I was going to stop there. A vegan cafe in little old Concord? I had to see this for myself!
Cafe Indigo is a little tricky to locate, as it’s in an industrial area of the city, and it doesn’t look like much from the outside, but the food and service were worth the trek! We were greeted immediately upon entering by some really friendly women that made us feel right at home.
There were many menu items that looked appealing, but I’d heard the seitan was amazing, so I knew I had to order that. I ended up with half of a teriyaki seitan wrap and the mixed green salad, which had edamame and sunflower seeds on it. Mike got the hickory smoked seitan wrap and the corn chowder (both sandwiches also came with some blue tortilla chips and coleslaw).
We selected some natural sodas, root beer for him, lime seltzer for me, and settled into the casual dining room. Our meals came out quickly and we dug in. We both LOVED the seitan, it was light and fluffy, moist and held the teriyaki and smoked hickory flavors incredibly well. The soup and salad were also tasty, but not outstanding.
When we came in, we noticed Cafe Indigo had an extensive dessert case, so we decided to get a couple of sweets to go. Both the carrot cake cupcake and chocolate ganache cupcake were divine. The whoopie pies, cookies (some were wheat-free) and mini-cakes also caught my eye–maybe next time!
I was really excited to see someone in Concord embracing vegan dining and doing it well. This little cafe is definitely worth a stop, especially if you’re curious about (or absolutely love) seitan and want a really good version. And don’t forget to pick up a sweet, they were terrific!
