The new year often brings resolutions to exercise, eat better and get healthier. But it’s easy to get sidetracked from your goals, especially if you’re working toward them on your own. Luckily for Somerville residents, this new year also brought the opening of a new gym, Achieve Fitness, just outside of Union Square that’s providing a different kind of place to reach your healthy living goals.
“We’re working to redefine your gym experience,” said Achieve Fitness co-owner Lauren Perreault. “We want everyone who comes in here to succeed.”
To ensure that happens, Perreault and co-owner Jason Pak (pictured at right) have developed a special system that provides each Achieve Fitness member with the tools they need to work out effectively and reach their fitness goals, which you can see firsthand at the gym’s grand opening on Thursday, January 17.
While many gyms take a one-size-fits-all-approach, Achieve Fitness tailors workouts to each member’s strengths (and weaknesses) to ensure that they don’t get injured and have a positive experience. Upon entering Achieve, you can’t help but notice that it looks very different from a regular gym. There are no cardio machines, for starters, because workouts are centered on strength training.
In their former jobs as personal trainers, Perreault and Pak “felt like there were pieces missing that were keeping people from succeeding.” So they made it their mission to create a gym that truly cares about helping people get healthier.
At the core of their approach is a customized fitness program that they provide to Achieve Fitness members. New gym members go through a strategy session with Perreault and Pak that includes a Functional Movement Screen and information-gathering about past health issues and fitness goals. Then Perreault and Pak create a plan tailored to the member’s goals and abilities.
“You work within your limits but still push yourself,” Perreault said.
And while Perreault and Pak do offer individual training sessions, they believe that the best experience for gym members is achieved when they work out in groups of threes with one instructor present.
“There’s more accountability and motivation” in the small groups, Perreault said. Pak added that the small-group approach increases camaraderie, giving Achieve Fitness members a support system for both encouragement and commiseration when the workouts get really tough.
“Everyone knows each other and everyone gets a specific workout for them,” Pak said. Perreault added that many of their longtime clients followed them to Achieve Fitness and have loved the changes that she and Pak have made. “People hang out here after, it’s a welcoming and comforting place,” Perreault said.
The Achieve Fitness founders learned about the small-group approach at a mentorship that they attended in California. It’s just one of the many continuing education programs they have participated in. In addition to the fitness aspect of healthier living, Pak and Perreault are planning to offer nutrition programs in the future, which will focus on “behavior goals to improve your diet.”
As longtime Somerville residents, there was no question of where Pak and Perreault would start their gym when the time was right.
“We’ve lived in Somerville for about five years and it was a good fit. We know a lot of people here,” Perreault said.
And you can see for yourself the uniqueness and passion of Achieve Fitness at the gym’s grand opening this Thursday, January 17 from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. at 42 Merriam St. Perreault and Pak will give a short talk from 6:30 p.m.-7 p.m. on why people fail at fat loss. There will also be raffles, like in-home massages, an acupuncture session and foam rollers.
Interested parties will also be able to sign up for an Achieve Fitness membership at a discounted price that will never go up, regardless of the price increases that occur in the memberships over time.
And while Pak and Perreault didn’t necessarly intend to open their doors at the beginning of the year, the timing couldn’t have been better. “It ended up being perfect,” Perreault said.
