Happy Birthday to the Beat!

SB LogoToday, and this whole week really, is pretty special over here at Beat headquarters. May 7 is the site’s third birthday, which I can hardly believe. I started the Beat because things were happening in Somerville and I wanted to know more about them–new businesses opening, people creating cool art and our many unique events. I figured I wasn’t the only one, but I had no idea how much interest in and love for Somerville was out there.

Since the Beat launched, the city has undergone a dramatic transformation from being sort of under-the-radar to a hip, happening hotspot. Longtime residents have always known that Somerville is a magical place and now the secret’s been let out. I’ve never been prouder to be a part of this community.

I want to thank our loyal readers, supporters and advertisers. I couldn’t have done this without you and wouldn’t want to. I’ve been so fortunate to have met, and made friends with, so many of you during the last three years. You’re what makes Somerville feel like a small town in a big city.

Prospect Tower

In the last three years, I bought a house in Somerville, committing to making it my long-term home. I’ve joined the board of Somerville Local First to advocate on behalf of and support the local, independent businesses, nonprofits and artists that make this city so special. I’ve started volunteering with local organizations like Community Cooks and helped start Creative Somerville, a new speaker series highlighting the creative, entrepreneurial spirit that Somerville embodies.

Here on the Beat we’ve increased our coverage of Somerville events, brought in contributors to share their voices and stayed true to our mission of covering Somerville on a local level. I can’t wait to see what the next three years have in store for the Beat and the city we call home.

See you around town,

P.S. This week isn’t just the Beat’s birthday, it’s mine too, so I’m taking tomorrow off from the weekend post. Never fear, the calendar is packed with fun things to do and we’ll be posting highlights on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as usual.
