‘Tis the Season for Sweet Treats

Yesterday I shared some of my favorite places to shop and ideas for holiday gifts found in Somerville. Today, I’m focusing on the sweet stuff–chocolate, confections and even mochi–made right here in town that would be the perfect present for the sweets-lover in your life or a tasty addition to your holiday party.

EHChocolatier: Elaine Hsieh and Catharine Sweeney whip up beautiful chocolates and confections, like almond and corn flake rochers and strawberry balsamic chocolates, in their Somerville kitchen. In addition to a variety of boxes that contain everything from bonbons to barks, EHChocolatier has a chocolate subscription club.

Mochi Kitchen: Erino Wade brings a taste of Japan to Somerville with her soft, pillowy mochi (pictured above). Wade makes all of her mochi fresh to order by hand. And while many people think that mochi only goes with ice cream, Wade’s creations run the gamut from sweet to savory.

Somerville Chocolate CSA: A tiny bean-to-bar operation, founder and chocolate-maker Eric Parkes focuses a lot on experimentation. His finished product is delicious and a fun way to always have a delicious supply of bean-to-bar treats.

Spindler Confections: While new flavor combinations seem to be all the rage in sweets, sometimes you just want a classic candy. That’s where Jeremy Spindler, the man behind Spindler Confections comes in. He makes the caramels, brittles (pictured above) and chocolates of your childhood–simply perfect for this time of year.

Taza Chocolate: The biggest chocolate game in town is also one of the tastiest, with products like chocolate covered peanuts or cacao nibs, Mexicano discs and bars of various flavors. A bean-to-bar operation, Taza also offers tours of its factory several times a week where you get a firsthand peak at the process.

Are you shopping any of Somerville’s sweet shops for the holidays?

P.S. Tonight is the Somerville Christmas tree and menorah lighting at the City Hall Concourse on Highland Ave. at 5:30 p.m. And then Davis Square is hosting Midnight Madness, which means many shops will be open late and have special seasonal deals! You can find all the event details here.
