Farmers Markets Abound in Somerville

It’s that time of year again when everything is green and bursting with life, which means it’s farmers market season! We’re lucky in Somerville to have a year-round market and several to choose from once the weather begins to warm. Here’s a rundown of where you can buy fresh, local produce and products from farmers markets Somerville.

Winter Farmers Market: Held each Saturday from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Armory, the winter farmers market runs from December 1, 2012-April 13, 2013. The market features produce from local farms like Apex Orchard and Enterprise Farm as well as locally produced foods like artisanal sweets from EHChocolatier, nuts from Fastachi and fish from Jordan Brothers Seafood.

Union Square Farmers Market: Held each Saturday in front of the Precinct/the Independent on the Union Square Plaza from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., the market runs from June 2, 2012-November 17, 2012. The market carries produce from regional farms like Drumlin Farm and Kimball Fruit Farm as well as meat from Stillman’s at the Turkey Farm, bread from Iggy’s and treats from Taza Chocolate.

Davis Square Farmers Market: For those too busy to make it to the weekend farmers markets, there’s a Wednesday market in Davis Square (Day and Herbert Streets) open from noon-6 p.m. from May 23, 2012-November 21, 2012, (note that the market closes at 5 p.m. on November 7, 14 and 21). The market features vendors like Bob’s Turkey Farm, Globe Fish Company and River Rock Farm.

Swirl & Slice Market: New in 2012, the Swirl & Slice market features wine and cheese tastings as well as other vendors selling prepared foods. There are live music, chocolate tastings and other fun events throughout the summer. The market runs on Thursdays from June 14, 2012-September 20, 2012, from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. on the Union Square Plaza.
