One of my favorite things to do on the weekends in the summer is head to the Union Square Farmers Market. I usually hit the Somerville Winter Farmers Market in the Armory on Highland Ave. when it’s open, but there’s something really special about picking out fresh fruits and veggies, fish and sweet treats outdoors on a warm summer morning.
On a recent visit, greens of all kinds looked vibrant and ready for salads, sautés and soups. We picked up some fresh bok choy, one of my favorite vegetables, which I like to wilt in a pan and drizzle with soy sauce so it caramelizes a bit. Then I sprinkle on some sesame seeds and serve!
I also got some of Jordan Bros.’ remaining fresh catch, swordfish. I’ve tried nearly every type of fish and shellfish they offer and have always been really impressed by the quality and freshness of the food.
Iggy’s Bread is always a tempting booth, with its crusty yet soft whole wheat sourdough bread and yummy bagels. Culinary Cruisers was selling kombucha on tap and its Ocean Ave Pops, while many area farms had goods like spring strawberries, beautiful eggs and local maple syrup.
If you’re looking for something sweet, there’s usually a booth or two of chocolate or pastries. And this year Journeyman is selling ice cream, perfect for a hot summer day.
