As I mentioned a couple of months ago, I recently moved to a new-to-me part of Somerville. In my old neighborhood, Bloc 11 served as my go-to cafe and while I still love it, I don’t live close enough for it to be my regular spot any more. I was really bummed about that at first, but only until realizing how close my new home is to Ball Square’s True Grounds.
This cute little cafe is tucked between Yak & Yeti and Blue Cloud Gallery on bustling Broadway. In addition to ample indoor seating, there are some tables and chairs set up outside that make great al fresco dining (and people watching) spots.
The first thing that catches your eye upon entering True Grounds is the bakery case. It’s stocked with fresh-made goodies like triple berry muffins, lemon cherry scones and apple cinnamon coffee cake. In addition to the sweets selection, True Grounds offers breakfast burritos and sandwiches as well as bagels with a plethora of toppings.
For lunch, True Grounds whips up a wide variety of wraps, like the Cranberry Curry (tofu, greens, red onions, carrots and cranberries with homemade curry dressing), and sandwiches, like the Pearson (turkey, pesto, fresh mozzarella and sliced granny smith apples), which can all be made into paninis. There are also tons of hearty salads with creative toppings.
In addition to terrific coffee, True Grounds stocks MEM Teas, brews yummy iced beverages and whips up tasty espresso-based drinks. There’s also a cold drink case with lots of choices, like seltzers, natural sodas and the like.
Beyond the yummy food and great coffee, True Grounds is staffed by super friendly people. Everyone is so nice and always has a smile to share. I love the funky, casual atmosphere and I’m so glad to have found a great new-to-me neighborhood cafe to frequent.
