Where to Celebrate Valentine’s Day in the ‘Ville

Some people can’t stand Valentine’s Day, but I’m a fan of any day that gives you an excuse to go out to a really nice dinner. To help you select a place to take your special someone, I’ve selected four of my favorite fancy restaurants in Somerville (OK, so one is technically in Cambridge) that serve incredible food and drinks, have impeccable service and that cozy candlelit setting perfect for a romantic meal.

Local Pollock

Bergamot: The food, drinks and service at Bergamot are all top-notch, a trifecta that many restaurants have difficulty achieving. That makes this a must-visit establishment for a special occasion. And if you’re feeling chilly, don’t miss the Irish coffee with fresh-made whipped cream. You’ll thank us later.

Bondir Scallops

Bondir: Though technically in Cambridge, I had to include Bondir on this list because of its romantic atmosphere (Boston Magazine even rated it the best upscale romantic restaurant in the area). The inspired cuisine changes almost daily, so anything you order is sure to be fresh and seasonal. I dined here for my one-year wedding anniversary and it was a wonderful way to celebrate.

Journeyman: This is a super special restaurant, so it’s ideal to go there on a super special evening, such as Valentine’s Day. The multi-course tasting menu of this Union Square eatery changes regularly, highlighting local flavors in unique ways. The meal I had at Journeyman last year might have been the best one I ate in 2012 (and one of the best ever) and I know it’ll be hard to top. Take someone super special here for a night you’ll never forget.

True Bistro: I had the pleasure of dining at True Bistro last year on Valentine’s Day and while that meal occurred nearly 12 months ago, we still talk about it all the time. The vegan restaurant in Teele Square prepares a special four-course menu with wine pairing for the evening that makes the meal feel extra special. And the cozy dining room, with its crisp white tablecloths and flickering candlelight, is the ideal venue for a romantic meal. [Update: Sources tell me that True Bistro is full for dinner, but I left it in here anyway so you can keep it in mind for next Valentine’s Day or another special occasion.]
