After a week off, the farmers market returns to Somerville this weekend at its indoor location, Arts at the Armory (191 Highland Ave.). The Somerville Winter Farmers Market will be open at the Armory every Saturday through March 29 from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
To kick off the season this Saturday, December 7, the Winter Farmers Market is hosting an Opening Day Celebration featuring live music and prizes to welcome vendors old and new.
Market-goers will discover many returning vendors from preview years as well as find several new vendors. Products available for purchase will include meat (pork, lamb, beef and poultry), eggs, lots of produce (apples, winter greens, root vegetables, etc.), seafood, cheese, yogurt, wine, pasta and sauce, kombucha, nuts, coffee and much more. The Winter Farmers Market also features several sweets vendors selling chocolates, candies, gluten-free treats, doughnuts, pies, cakes and more.
Among the new vendors is Hosta Hill, a Western Mass.-based farm selling handmade tempeh and fermented vegetables like krauts and kimchi. Barismo will be selling locally roasted, fair-trade coffee beans as well as pouring fresh cups of the stuff.
Rhode Island-based Narragansett Creamery will be at the Winter Farmers Market on alternating weeks with fresh yogurt and a wide variety of cheeses. And Massachusetts apples will make an appearance in products like hard ciders, apple cider vinegar and cider syrup from Carr’s Ciderhouse.
In addition to all the delicious food and beverages you can buy at the Winter Farmers Market, there’s usually live entertainment in the form of local musicians. The market vendors accept cash, credit/debit cards and SNAP/EBT.
I absolutely love the farmers markets in Somerville and if you’ve never made it to the Winter Farmers Market, I urge you to check it out. It’s grown tremendously in only a few years and going each week to buy fresh, local food is one of my favorite things to do. Not only do I love supporting regional businesses and eating such delicious food, I always see familiar faces and it truly feels like a celebration of our awesome community!
