Weekend 2.1-2.3: Events for a Sweet Season

Valentine’s Day might still be two weeks away, but preparations for the holiday are already underway all over Somerville. I’ve got all the details on a very special shopping event (featuring the highly sought-after Union Square Donuts) happening this coming Thursday. And this weekend brings the Saturday Local Artist Market at The Burren and a beer and chocolate event happening at Taza to get you in the sweet spirit.

The Davis Square shop has a special event this coming Thursday, February 7, from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. Whats-Nü is teaming up with its neighbors The Boston Shaker, Nellie’s Wildflowers and Union Square Donuts to bring you A Very Davis Valentine’s, a special shopping event along Holland Street. Wine and Beer Tastings: Ball Square Fine Wines & Liquors (716 Broadway) hosts a Slieve Foy 8 Years Old Irish Single Malt Whiskey tasting from 5 p.m.-7 p.m., a tasting of the February Wines of the Month from 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. and a Weihenstephaner and Clipper City beer tasting from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Davis Square’s Downtown Wine & Spirits (225 Elm St.) hosts a Sun Wine tasting from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. Also in Davis, Dave’s Fresh Pasta (81 Holland St.) hosts a tasting from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. In Magoun Square, Olde Magoun’s Saloon (518 Medford St.) hosts a Weihenstephan beer tasting from 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.

A Sacred Flame: An Improvisational Piano Meditation with Susan Robbins: Mark the mid-point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox with a candlelit musical meditation at Third life Studio (33 Union Square). Tickets for the 8 p.m. event are $15 at the door.

Saturday

Winter Farmers Market Veggies

Winter Farmers Market: The Winter Farmers Market runs this and every Saturday through April 13 from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at Arts at the Armory (191 Highland Ave.). This weekend at the market, the Community Growing Center is hosting a seed swap from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The public is invited to bring seeds to share, take home new seeds, discuss gardening tips and more at this free event.

Saturday Local Artist Market: Artists working in a variety of mediums, like photography, jewelry and ceramics, will be at The Burren (247 Elm St.) this Saturday from noon-4 p.m. selling their wares just in time for Valentine’s Day. The Saturday Local Artist Market will be followed by a bluegrass musical performance and The Burren will be offering a $5 lunch special in addition to its regular menu.

Taza Disc Sampler

Can’t Keep ‘Em Apart–A Beer and Chocolate Love Story: Drink Craft Beer is coming to the Taza Chocolate Factory Store (561 Windsor St.) this Saturday from 2 p.m.-6 p.m. and bringing a few friends, like Roxy’s Grilled Cheese and Slumbrew for an afternoon of beer and chocolate love. For $5, you get beer samples paired with Taza Chocolates and you provide 12.5 meals to those in need through the Greater Boston Food Bank.

Somerville Songwriter Sessions: The Arts at the Armory Cafe hosts the Somerville Songwriter Sessions this Saturday featuring Boston singer/songwriters Terry Kitchen and Dean Stevens and Maine singer/songwriter David Dodson. The 8 p.m. event promises politically oriented folk music. Tickets are $10.

Sunday

Parkour Classes: Central Hill Park (81 Highland Ave.) plays host to Parkour classes this Sunday morning for adults 14-plus from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. ($8) and for kids six to 13 years old from 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m. ($7). Parkour has roots in a variety of places, from gymnastics and climbing to martial arts and athletics. All ability levels are welcome!

Session Planetaria: Sally O’Brien’s (335 Somerville Ave.) hosts Session Planetaria, an open jam improv concert, on Sunday afternoon. The session is led by a group of experienced improv musicians and it evolves in a round robin with musicians, poets and storytellers of all levels participating. The event takes place from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. and sign-ups begin at 1:30 p.m.
