Somerville may be a culinary hot spot now, but the seeds for that may have been planted nearly 100 years ago when Archibald Query invented Fluff here. And this Saturday, you can celebrate this sweet substance in all its glory at the Eighth Annual What the Fluff? Festival.
The festival takes place in Union Square from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. on Saturday, September 28 (rain date of Sunday, September 29) and features local artists, a cooking contest, live music, performers and more ways to eat Fluff than you ever thought possible.
“I love that the festival has become synonymous with Somerville,” said Mimi Graney, executive director of Union Square Main Streets. “It allows us to advance Union Square as a business district. It brings people to the businesses and provides an economic boost.”
About 10,000 fans of Fluff are expected to descend on the square to hear The Ward Eights, Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library and Marc Pinansky and the Bored of Health rock out while Wheels-N-Motion BMX Stunt Team jump over a tower of Fluff and Fluffernutters.
I was fortunate enough to be a cooking contest judge last year and got to sample many delectable delights containing Fluff throughout the day. The creativity displayed by the entrants was incredible and I’d advise anyone with an inspired idea on how to serve Fluff to whip something up! The winner will get a tour of the top-secret Durkee Mower Fluff Factory, a trophy, gift certificates to local businesses and of course, the glory of coming out on top. And if cooking isn’t your thing, you can enter the Fabulous Pharaoh of Fluff competition to become the reigning king or queen of Fluff.
“The style of the festival fits with the culture of the neighborhood,” Graney said. “The playfulness and not taking itself too seriously. It’s inclusive. It lets everybody feel like a VIP and gives everyone a chance to own it.”
Work up an appetite for some Fluff-flavored dishes at the Shenanigans Stage where games like a Fluff Lick-Off, Blind Man’s Fluff and Fluff jousting will be taking place. There will also be activities like Pin the F on Fluff Boy, Fluff Fear Factor and Fluff Fishing happening throughout the festival.
And of course, there will be food–lots of it! Local businesses will be on hand serving up treats made with Fluff, including the classic Fluffernutter, which Zagat recently named the Massachusetts state sandwich. And there will be special cocktails and beers topped with Fluff to wash it all down.
