Cara is dressing up as Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time this year for Halloween. Thanks to everyone who entered–your costume ideas were truly amazing–and remember that if you didn’t win tickets, you can still buy them here.
Halloween may get all the hype, but there’s another big holiday happening this week too: Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. This Mexican observance involves family and friends remembering those who have died through prayer, food and ofrendas–altars honoring the deceased. And there’s nowhere better in Somerville to get the full Dia de los Muertos experience than at Cuisine en Locale this weekend.
The locavore chefs, who operate out of the former Anthony’s space (156 Highland Ave.), are throwing their annual ONCE de los Muertos feast on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at noon. The events will feature lots of locally sourced food and a full program of live music.
On Saturday night, Cuisine en Locale is cooking up Taza Chocolate mole, Stillman Farm pulled pork verde, pain de los meurtos (bread of the dead) and much more that will be served buffet-style. Live music with begin with a mariachi band, followed by Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys, with a special appearance by Brooklyn’s Charming Disaster.
If you can’t make the Saturday night festivities or you want to bring the whole family, swing by Cuisine en Locale on Sunday afternoon for ONCE de los Muertos, part two. Enjoy an all-you-can-eat taco brunch that will be followed by a performance by Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys at 2 p.m. Adult tickets are $25 and children under 12 get in for $10.
Tickets for ONCE de los Muertos on Saturday night are $40 each, but today, I’ve got your chance to win two!

Best costume was the Honey Badger!
My favorite was when I was a Chile Pepper Queen I used an old brides maid dress and using died chiles and tiny handmade flour tortillas I made a chile pepper scepter, a necklace that looked like chiles floating around my neck, and a elaborate crown.
This year my husband and I are going as Candace and Toni from the Feminist bookstore Women & Women First. I’m going to carry some feminist literature and hand out vaginally inspired stickers. He will have his mason jar of slightly gritty herbal tea.
My favorite costume of all time was dressing up as Women in Binders with a friend of mine. This year, it’s looking like I’ll be a never-nude.
I have one year old twins & we are dressing up as a family of creepy toys. The babies are going to be Chucky & Tiffany (from Bride of Chucky). I am going to be a homicidal porcelain doll & my husband is going to be a murderous clown jack-in-the-box. We’re going to be hanging out in the garage offering candy to little children all night long on Friday.
I’m going ad Twisty the clown from American horror story! Creeeeepy!
Aside from many years spent living in Tucson AZ and participating in the festivities for Dia De Muertos (always the best holiday to dress up for), my favorite costume for the Halloween holiday was dressing up as a #2 pencil. Full yellow leotard, pepto pink rubber “wig”, pointed black shoes and even a green band around my neck. Best way to locate your fellow nerd friends!
I will be reviving my 80s aerobics instructor outfit complete with thong leaotard, but revamping it for an outer space themed party. So, I’ll be an ALIEN 80s aerobics instructor.
Wonder Woman, both this year and when I was 5 :))
The best Halloween costume I ever had was a lightning bug costume that my dad made for me when I was a kid. It had real lights in it and I could turn it on on demand so that I would glow. It was awesome, and I was the coolest kid trick or treating that year. This costume still exists in my parents’ attic and I am just waiting for the right moment to bring it back and unleash the awesome.
I just got my fairy wings and antennae in the mail today! What can’t you be with those props!!!
Elphaba
The first costume I remember my Mother dressing me up as was the singer from AC/DC ANGUS YOUNG… she putt dressed me up like him, hat, tie, coat, shorts… and finished the costume off this PINK chuck taylors. My grandpa has a picture of me somewhere framed where I’m kicking my leg up and doing his lil dance.
This year I plan to dress as the 11th Doctor… The Matt Smith version with a fez, red bow tie and suspenders. But I’ll be dressed as a female version 😉
HOPE I CAN WIN THESE TICKETS!!! *crosses fingers*
My costume this year is princess bubblegum from adventure time!
I was dead geisha girl who lost her life tragically via chop sticks to the throat. I handed out unfortunate cookies to the living! Love Halloween!
I dressed up as a Cat-astrophe for Halloween a few years ago. . . that was pretty special.
Best costume was Professor Quincy Adams Wagstaff (Groucho in Horse Feathers).
This year I am going to be a watermelon!
This year I’ll be Frida Kahlo. My fave costume ever was “Alex” from Flashdance!
This year I’m going as a mermaid 🙂
once i went as a dark cloud with a silver lining. it involved many puffs of dark cloud colored tulle and silver eyeliner. it was pretty abstract and no one knew what the heck i was supposed to be, but oh well, i felt mysterious and pretty.
I was a Giant Fancy Carrot two years ago.
I’d built what was basically an enormous orange muppet mascot head from upholstery foam and a very large piece of orange felt, and then wore my sharpest pinstripe suit.
I couldn’t see or hear a damn thing, and so when we went to the costume party at the Druid in Inman, and someone started being friendly about giving my rear end a squeeze, I assumed that it was my date, and held the hand there.
Turns out that my date was at the bar getting us drinks, and that the bold young man who’d decided I was not only a Fancy Carrot but a Sexy Fancy Carrot really liked holding hands.
I still have no idea who he was, however.
This year, the plan was a Groot and fem-Rocket couple costume, but my partner’s sister’s wedding put the kibosh on that.
This year I’m going as a Queen Bee…see Lil’ Kim, Urban Dictionary and of course the actual marvelous creature.
My husband and I were a bagel and cream cheese, it was a hit.
I had a great ladybug costume my grandmother made for me when I was a kid!
This year my girlfriend and I are going as Rocket and Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy 🙂
I am going as a 50’s Pin Up this year, but my favorite was when I was a zombie stripper.
My favorite one was Brian Jonestown Massacre!
This year I’m going as Samara from The Ring. I plan on crawling up and down the T cars to give all the passengers some Halloween … cheer? Currently, I’m aging my Garment District dress for it in black tea.
The best costume I’ve ever worn was a “veloci-rapper” — a Halloween mash-up of velociraptor/rapper. Lots of bling and dino-scales.
love CeL! My costume is going to be a tiny human.
Nothing will ever compare to the many childhood years I spent dressed up as a dalmatian. Painted face, a tail, the works.
