Halloween falls mid-week this year, giving us two weekends to celebrate one of the year’s most fun holidays. Harvest Fest kicks things off this Saturday, but if you’re still looking for something to do the following week, I’ve got just the ticket. Two tickets actually, to the second annual ONCE de los Muertos Locavore MassMex Feast put on by Cuisine en Locale next Friday, November 2, at Arts at the Armory (191 Highland Ave.)
“I love Dia de los Muertos,” said JJ Gonson, the woman behind Cuisine en Locale and ONCE de los Muertos. “I was surprised there wasn’t a Day of the Dead festival.” So Gonson decided to create an event to celebrate the Mexican holiday where family and friends get together to honor their deceased loved ones.
The chefs of Cuisine en Locale (pictured below), who work out of Kitchen Inc. (201 Somerville Ave.), are doing what they do best for ONCE de los Muertos by putting together a multi-course all-local meal featuring regional ingredients and products. From the Taza Chocolate chicken mole and the Ocean Ave Pops sweet corn Mexican paletas (popsicles) to handmade tortillas and Stillman Farm meat, the food is all local and all delicious.
After living on the West Coast for a decade, Gonson became somewhat of a specialist in cooking this type of Mexican cuisine.
“I have a lot of hands-on Mexican home cooking training. They’re all dishes I’m really proud of,” Gonson said. She plans to combine that with her passion for local food, highlighting many ingredients from Massachusetts in the feast. “Local food rocks,” she said.
And no party that falls this close to Halloween would be complete without a costume contest, so come dressed to impress. Some fabulous prizes, like tickets to a future ONCE dinner and kitchen-related wares, will be awarded to the winner. Kitchensurfing, a website that hooks personal chefs up with people looking for professionals to cook for them, is behind the giveaways.
And now for our giveaway …
