One of my favorite parts about events like Somerville Open Studios and PorchFest is exploring streets I may have never traveled before and getting a glimpse at how other Somervillians live. There’s another chance to do just that this Sunday, June 9, on the Somerville Garden Club Tour, which features the back (and front) yards of several of its members.
The self-guided tour takes place from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and visits the yards of about 20 Somerville Garden Club members. The gardeners will welcome visitors to their yards, providing tour attendees with the opportunity to learn about plants, design and horticulture.
“There’s an incredible variety of gardens,” said Lisa Dezmelyk, the club’s publicist. “There a few gardens in town that are large and jaw-dropping. You’ll be able to meet the gardeners who made 100% of the garden. They did the back-breaking labor. People love being able to talk to the gardeners.”
Dezmelyk’s own garden, pictured above, is full of roses and herbs and is one of the tour’s stops. The gardens on the 2013 tour are diverse, just like Somerville, and may leave you inspired to create a green space of your very own.
Tickets for the tour are $15 and are on sale now at Pemberton Garden Center (2225 Mass. Ave., Cambridge), Porter Square Books (25 White Street, Cambridge) and True Grounds Café and Coffeehouse (717 Broadway, Somerville). You can also purchase tickets on the day of the tour in the Davis Square Statue Park (across from the T stop) from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The event takes place rain or shine.
