This week (May 14-May 20), Somerville is celebrating bicycles with several events around town. Here’s how you can participate:
Ride of Silence: A 6.8-mile ride will take off from Seven Hills Park behind the Davis Square T stop on Wednesday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m. to honor those killed or injured biking on public roads. The ride looks to raise awareness among drivers to be careful around bicyclists. Helmets required and it’s recommended that you RSVP.
Bike Commuter Breakfast: On Thursday, May 17, from 7:30 a.m.-9 a.m. there will be free breakfast for bike commuters at the corner of Beacon and Sacramento Streets provided by Star Market and Petsi Pies. Bike commuters can also get bike check-ups and tune-ups from Bike Boom. (Note: This has been moved from Wednesday to Thursday due to rain.)
Bike Commuter Convoys: On Friday, May 18, there will be two bike convoys in Davis Square heading to Boston City Hall Plaza. The first one starts in Lexington and comes through Davis at 7 a.m. before continuing on to Beacon/Hampshire Street and crossing the Charles at the Longfellow Bridge. The second convoy starts in Davis at 7:40 a.m. and will ride through Harvard and Kendall before heading into Boston.
Herring Run Bike Tour of the Mystic Basin Trail Network: At 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 20, there will be an eight-mile bike ride through the growing Mystic Basin trail network. The ride will depart from the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse and riders must bring their own bikes and wear helmets. There is a $10 fee for the ride.
Somerville Parks Bike Tour: Also on Sunday, May 20, the Somerville Bicycle Committee and Somerville Historic Preservation Society will lead an eight-mile bike tour through the city’s parks. The ride starts at Somerville City Hall and costs $3.
