May is National Bike Month, a chance to celebrate and showcase the many benefits of cycling, whether it’s for commuting, exercise or just for fun. In honor of Bike Month, the Somerville Bicycle Committee and Brooklyn Boulders Somerville (12A Tyler St.) are hosting a week of bike-themed events that includes tune-ups, workshops and rides. Here’s the schedule:
Thursday, May 1, 7 p.m.-10 p.m.
Kick-off event featuring advocacy, check-ups and the Somerville Bicycle Police.
Friday, May 2, 7 p.m.-10 p.m.
“Dogfight Derby” by SCUL, Boston Bike Polo “Knife Fight” and check-ups.
Saturday, May 3, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Advocacy, DIY maintenance, kids’ activities, check-ups, vendors and group ride along the Minuteman.
Tuesday, May 6, 7 p.m.-10 p.m.
Advocacy, check-ups, unicycling and Bikeyface.
Wednesday, May 7, 7 p.m.-10 p.m.
Advocacy, check-ups and flat demo.
Friday, May 9, 8 p.m.-11 p.m.
Boston Bike Party Ride from Copley Square to Brooklyn Boulders Somerville with an after-party next door at Aeronaut Brewing (14 Tyler St.).
All events take place at Brooklyn Boulders (12A Tyler St.) unless otherwise noted. And all participants must pay to enter the facility and take part in the events. If you bring a bike helmet, the fee is only $19 and includes gym orientation, climbing equipment and complete access to the gym. You must also fill out a waiver if it’s your first time visiting Brooklyn Boulders.
In addition to these events, the Friends of the Somerville Public Library is hosting The Library Ride on Saturday, May 3 at 9 a.m. The six-mile ride will start at the library’s West Branch (40 College Ave.) in Davis Square and visit all three branches of the library with stops at each for activities, tours and refreshments. Adults are $5 and children ride free.
On Wednesday, May 7, join the Mass BikePike Tour team at East End Grille (118 Broadway) for its 2014 Bike Month Party. Enjoy free appetizers, a cash bar and giveaways. Attendees will also get a discount code to use if they sign up for the Mass BikePike’s Friendliest Ride in the East happening this summer. There is a $5 suggested donation for the event, which takes place from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Space is limited, so it is requested that attendees RSVP.
The Somerville Bicycle Committee is also hosting a commuter breakfast in the parking lot of Star Market (275 Beacon St.) on Monday, May 12 from 7 a.m.-9 a.m. Ride over for a morning meal, bike check-ups and to chat about biking in Somerville.
