Somerville Summer: Action-Packed Thursday Nights

There are so many fun events going on around town each weekend this summer (and the coming one is especially full), but Thursday nights in Somerville have become quite action-packed as well. Update: Several events have been canceled tonight because of the predicted severe weather–stay safe out there!

Summer-Ville Cooldown: Somerville Local First is hosting the Summer-Ville Cooldown at Olde Magoun’s Saloon tonight from 5:30-7:30. The event will feature a two-hour beer tasting with local favorites Berkshire Brewing Company and Notch Brewing and a vegetarian-friendly menu. Local business owners, community leaders and many others are expected to attend the event, which supports Somerville Local First’s efforts to create and sustain communities in Somerville. Tickets are $20 for Somerville Local First members, $50 for a supporter ticket and an annual community membership and $25 for a supporter ticket.

Somerville Olympics of a Special Kind: The two-week sporting spectacle that is the Olympics kicks off tomorrow night in London, but Somerville is hosting its own celebration, the Somerville Olympics of a Special Kind. The event, sponsored by the Somerville School Department, Walnut Street Center, the Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions clubs, was supposed to take place on Thursday, July 26, but has been moved to August 2 at 5:30 p.m. because of forecasted rain. Mayor Joe Curtatone will kick off the event, which will feature a parade, entertainment by the Sunsetters and five events for children and adults with developmental disabilities to participate in. Everyone is encouraged to attend and show their support!

Swirl & Slice Market and Tasting Table: Each Thursday from 5 p.m.-8 p.m., the Union Square Plaza hosts the Swirl & Slice Market, featuring local wines, cheeses and other goods. I’ve been several times and have really enjoyed meeting so many local farmers and food producers as well as the festive feel the live music encourages. I also attended an event at the Tasting Table focusing on herbs and cheese, which was both educational and delicious. This week’s Tasting Table will focus on chocolate and wine and costs $15 to attend. There are different events every week, so check the calendar to find the one that speaks to your tastes! Update: The market is canceled tonight because of predicted severe weather–stay safe out there!

SomerMovie Fest: Each Thursday during the summer, you can watch a free movie outside at various locations around Somerville. Tonight you can catch The Muppets at Seven Hills Park in Davis Square at sunset. Bring a blanket and enjoy seeing a film under the stars! Update: The movie is canceled tonight because of predicted severe weather–stay safe out there!

Did I miss any events happening tonight? What events are you planning to attend in Somerville tonight? Let me know in the comments!
