Weekend 1.4-1.6: Yoga, Shakespeare & Music

Happy New Year! I hope you’ve had a nice re-entry into the real world after a lovely holiday season. It seems the calendar did us a favor this year by giving us a nice short workweek to start 2013. And now that it’s the weekend again, it’s time to think about all the fun to be had during the next few days!

Friday

Coffee Tastings: Join the folks at Counter Culture Coffee’s Boston Training Center (374 Somerville Ave.) for a coffee cupping (tasting) this and every Friday at 10 a.m. Diesel Cafe (257 Elm St.) is also hosting a coffee tasting this Friday from 10 a.m.-noon.

TOS Ball Square TastingWine and Beer Tastings: Ball Square Fine Wines & Liquors (716 Broadway) hosts a tasting of its January Wines of the Month from 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. and a Burke Specialty Beers tasting from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Davis Square’s Downtown Wine & Spirits (225 Elm St.) hosts a Sam Adams tasting from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. 

Two Gentlemen of Verona: The Actors’ Shakespeare Project presents Two Gentlemen of Verona this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Davis Square Theatre (255 Elm St., downstairs). Tickets are $28-$50.

Return to Self: Start the year off with a two-hour Return to Self workshop at Bow Street Yoga (34 Bow St.) in Union Square on Friday from 7:45 p.m.-9:45 p.m. The session starts with 10 minutes of meditation, then moves to 90 minutes of yoga practice suitable for all levels and ends with 20 minutes of  meditation. The workshop costs $35 and you can sign up here.

Saturday

Winter Farmers Market: The Winter Farmers Market runs again this and every Saturday through April 13 from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at Arts at the Armory (191 Highland Ave.). This week’s market will feature guest vendors Lilac Hedge Farm, Nobscot Artisan Cheese, Soluna Garden Farms, Vianne Chocolat, 7ate9 Bakery, Coastal Vineyards, Deborah’s Kitchen and Valicenti Organico, in addition to the regular vendors.

Two Gentlemen of Verona: The Actors’ Shakespeare Project presents Two Gentlemen of Verona this Saturday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Davis Square Theatre (255 Elm St., downstairs). Tickets are $28-$50.

Somerville Songwriter Series: The Arts at the Armory Cafe (191 Highland Ave.) hosts the Somerville Songwriter Series kick-off this Saturday at 8 p.m. The event features performances by Boston-based artists Terry Kitchen, Beth Desombre, Laura Bullock and Bethel Steele as well as Providence-based signer/songwriter Jan Luby. Admission is $10.

Sunday

Two Gentlemen of Verona: The Actors’ Shakespeare Project presents Two Gentlemen of Verona this Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Davis Square Theatre (255 Elm St., downstairs). This performance will be immediately followed by a discussion at the venue. Tickets are $28-$50.

The New Babushkas: The Arts at the Armory Cafe (191 Highland Ave.) hosts The New Babushkas playing accordion, flute, cello and more in a blend of French, Balkan and modern music on Sunday from 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. The performance is free.

Upcoming

City Chicks9-Course Tasting Dinner: Next Sunday, January 13, City Chicks/Homemade Modern is hosting a nine-course tasting dinner featuring seasonal ingredients prepared by some of the people who’ve taught classes at the Kitchen Inc. (201 Somerville Ave.) space in the last few months. Somerville-based Black Magic Coffee, Forêt Designs, Happy Homemade and Ocean Ave Pops are all participating. Tickets for the event are $80 and can be purchased until Monday, January 7.
