Weekend 1.9-1.11: Somerville Idol, Boozy Gelato & Blues Jam

With school and work back in full swing this week after the holidays, you’re probably more than ready for the weekend. Luckily there’s a lot of fun to be had in Somerville during the next few days, including several music events, art shows, boozy frozen treats and much more. Highlights are below and a full listing of this weekend’s events can be found on our calendar.

The Sketchbook Show Opening Reception: Check out the Nave Gallery Annex’s new exhibit, The Sketchbook Show, at Friday night’s opening reception. The show, which runs throughout January, takes a peek into artists’ working minds.

Somerville Idol Competition: Come to East End Grille on Friday night for the kick-off of the Somerville Idol Competition. The four-week singing contest runs throughout the month until a Somerville Idol is crowned on January 30. Attendees will be able to cast their votes for their favorite contestants alongside guest judges.

Booze Epoque Harmony and Meaghan


Winter Wonderland: A Boozy Gelato Pop-Up by Ice Cubed: Join Ice Cubed, a collaboration among Booze Époque (pictured above), Gelology and Churn Baby Churn, for a Boozy Gelato Pop-Up on Saturday at Kitchen Inc. Attendees will get to enjoy two hearty soups, edible gel art and nonalcoholic punches alongside the boozy treats.

Deleuzer Residency: The Washington Street Art Gallery will kick off Boston experimental music ensemble Deleuzer’s January residency on Saturday night with an exhibit opening and performance. The month-long residency will feature visual arts, sound installations, performances and more.



Open Blues Jam: Each Sunday, Johnny D’s hosts the Boston area’s longest-running blues jam. All are invited to participate or just listen at this fun, low-key evening of music.

Sunday Roast and Hyper-Local Cask: End your weekend with a traditional Sunday Roast and a hyper-local cask at Olde Magoun’s Saloon. The Magoun Square bar and restaurant cooks up a different hearty meal each Sunday and taps hyper-local beers to pair with it.
