Weekend 4.17-4:19: Bees, Birdhouses & Brews

Winter has officially been over for a couple of weeks, but for me, it truly felt like spring last Sunday when the #somsnow15 contest ended. The warmer weather this week didn’t hurt either and luckily enough, it looks like it’s going to continue right through the weekend. There’s a lot of going on in Somerville and I hope you get to enjoy it all! Highlights are below and a full listing can be found on our Calendar of Events.

Craft My WeddingCraft fair meets bridal show this Sunday, April 19 at the Arts at the Armory (191 Highland Ave.) at the second annual Craft My Wedding featuring handmade vendors and local businesses. Come out to enjoy an afternoon of goodie bags filled with great discounts and samples (for the first 150 brides), awesome day-of-only discounts, live music, demonstrations, unique entertainers, food samples, a cash bar, fashion show, in-house salon, photo booth and more! The Birds and the Bees Opening Reception: Spring is in the air at the Nave Gallery this Friday for the opening reception of its current exhibit, The Birds and the Bees. “Brush up on bee lore, botanical illustration, nest building techniques, avian husbandry, honey hunting or ornithological sleights of hand,” at the show, which continues through May 10.

WEMF Radio Presents: Electric Fresh: Independent Cambridge radio station WEMF presents a night of new rock, alternative and metal music on Friday at PA’s Lounge. The show kicks off at 9 p.m. with Big Time Kill who will be followed by Lure Of The Animal, 95Hyde and Ambushed.



Somerville Birdhouse Project: After a successful first event last year, the Somerville Birdhouse Project is back this weekend. Make or buy and decorate your own birdhouse to bring and hang up this Saturday morning in Union Square.

Second Annual Empty Bowls Benefit: Come to Mudflat Studios on Saturday evening for the Empty Bowls Benefit to support Cambridge nonprofit Food for Free. Choose a one-of-a-kind bowl to fill with as much soup from local restaurants as you’d like and then take it home at the end of the night!

Sixth Annual Shape Up Somerville Road Race: Get the whole family involved in fitness this Sunday at the Sixth Annual Shape Up Somerville Road Race. The day kicks off with a one-mile children’s fun run at 10:30 a.m., continues with a 5K race and walk at 11 a.m. and ends with a celebration for runners at Casey’s.

Aeronaut BrewScience: Brew Demos for the Cambridge Science Festival: Explore the science of brewing while sipping on Aeronaut’s beers on Sunday evening. Learn more about yeast science and watch a mash demo while geeking out about all the science that goes into brewing beer.
