Our brutal winter did a number on much of the local landscape and it needs some assistance to get back on track for spring. You can help beautify Somerville this Saturday at the city-wide Spring Cleanup and reward yourself after with a BBQ. Also on tap this weekend is the Independent Film Festival Boston, art and music shows, a pop-up shop and the first International Market Tour of the season. Highlights are below and the full listing of events can be found on our calendar. Have fun out there!
Independent Film Festival Boston: Though the name of the Independent Film Festival indicates that it’s in Boston, most of the films are actually shown at the Somerville Theatre. You can catch narrative, documentary and short films on a variety of subjects all weekend long in Somerville (as well as a few in Cambridge and Brookline).
Metal and Fire Opening Reception: Come to the Nave Gallery on Friday evening for the opening reception of Metal and Fire, a show featuring many pieces of metal work and sculpture (including some by Skunk, above). If you can’t make it to the Nave for the reception, put this on your list for next weekend’s Somerville Open Studios event. (Full post on that coming Monday!)
Somerville Spring Cleanup and BBQ: Help beautify Somerville on Saturday during the city-wide Spring Cleanup. Residents should meet their Ward Captains at specific locations (see link above) at 10 a.m. to get started. And when all the hard work is finished, everyone is invited to a BBQ at the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse from noon-2 p.m.
International Market Tour: The Somerville Art Council’s International Market Tours of Union Square are back for the season. The first one is this Saturday from 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m. and meets in the Union Square Plaza. The tours are free, but attendees are encouraged to purchase items from the three markets they visit if they see something that catches their eye. Learn more about the International Market Tours.
Boston General Store Pop-Up: Swing into Forge Baking Company on Sunday for another pop-up shop from Boston General Store. This one features special items, like terrarium kits, house plants and hydroponic herb kits, just in time for spring. My advice is to plan your stop around a meal so you can enjoy Forge’s delicious eats (pictured above).
Live Music: What better way is there to wind down the weekend than with live music? There are a variety of performances happening in Somerville on Sunday including a Voices of Harmony show featuring Songs of Freedom and When Cultures Converge, a Journeys in Sound show, both at the Arts at the Armory. Later that night, The Roy Sludge Trio performs at Highland Kitchen.
