I love living in Somerville all year, but this is probably my very favorite season. Between all the festivals getting started (like this Saturday’s PorchFest) and the farmers markets opening (Union Square starts on Saturday), there’s never a dull moment in the city. Highlights from this action-packed weekend are below and a full listing of Somerville events can be found on our calendar.
With rain in the forecast, we’ll try to update as often as possible regarding any event changes, but be sure to check with individual event organizers prior to heading out.
Pop-Up Shops: There are two fun pop-ups happening in Somerville this weekend that are perfect for stopping into on your travels about town. Swing into Forge Baking Company on Friday, Saturday or Sunday to browse mid-century, American-made items for your home, bar and kitchen from Black Market Modern Vintage. Then head over to Secret Ships for its pop-up within a pop-up with vintage fashion purveyors House of Findings on Friday or Saturday.
Friends of the Somerville Public Library Book Sale: Summer is nearly upon us, making it the perfect time to pick up new-to-you reads for the beach and vacation season ahead. Shop inexpensive books ($2 for adults, $1 for kids), CDs and DVDs at the Friends of the Public Library Book Sale on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All proceeds from the sale go directly to support library programs like the Museum Passes.
Union Square Farmers Market: Saturday is one of my favorite days of the year because it’s the first Union Square Farmers Market of the season! The market is open from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. every Saturday rain or shine through November 21 on the Union Square Plaza. Shop for local produce, bread and baked goods, meat and seafood, sweet treats and much more. (Check back on Wednesday for a post on all of Somerville’s farmers markets.)
PorchFest: Another reason why this Saturday is one of my favorite days of the year is that it’s PorchFest in Somerville! This free, decentralized music festival is a fun way to spend an afternoon with friends and family exploring the sounds of the city. Don’t miss our guide on how to do PorchFest like a pro.
19th Annual Mystic River Herring Run and Paddle: Kick off Sunday morning with the 19th Annual Mystic River Herring Run and Paddle, which includes a 5K run/walk, paddling races and a Bike to the Sea bicycle tour. All events are held at the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse on the shore of the Mystic River.
Great Fiber Swap: Get rid of the extra yarn, fabric and thread you’ve unearthed during your spring cleaning at this weekend’s Fiber Swap at the Nave Gallery. Or if you’re looking to start a project, stop by to pick up what others have brought to the swap, which kicks off the 2015 Wrap Around Project to support the Somerville Homeless Coalition. The event is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring toiletries or canned goods to support Project SOUP.
