This is going to be my first Memorial Day weekend spent in Somerville, so I’m excited to see how the city feels at a time when I’m typically out of town. The weather looks absolutely perfect for barbecues and parades, two things that make Memorial Day weekend great. Here’s what’s on tap in and around Somerville …
Winter Farmers Market: This is the last week that the farmers market will be held at the Armory (191 Highland Ave.) before it moves to Union Square next week. Stock up on fresh produce, meat and popsicles from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 26, for your Memorial Day barbecue!
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonies: At 8 a.m. on Sunday, May 27, a short procession will go down Highland Ave. to the Central Library where wreaths will be placed on monuments along Central Hill Park. The parade beings at 1 p.m. at the City Hall/Somerville High School concourse and will go down Highland Ave. to end at the Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Teele Square, where there will be a remembrance ceremony. The parade will feature 12 marching bands as well as a variety of school and community groups.
Cocktail Cupcake Happy Hour: End your long weekend the right way with a free tasting of mini cupcakes with cocktail-inspired flavors at Kickass Cupcakes (378 Highland Ave.). Sample cupcakes that taste like Sex on the Beach, French Kiss and the Screaming Orgasm from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. on Monday, May 28.
MFA Free Admission: If you’re looking to duck inside for a bit, the Museum of Fine Arts has free admission on Monday, May 28, in honor of Memorial Day. If you haven’t checked out the fabulous American Wing, now is your chance!
Music and theater lovers should check out Woody Sez before its run ends on June 3. If you’re hungry (or thirsty), try The Painted Burro, Dosa Temple or Backbar. And Mt. Auburn Cemetery is the perfect place to explore on a beautiful spring day (note that the cemetery is having some special events to commemorate Memorial Day).
