There are so many fun things going on in and around Somerville this weekend! The Union Square Farmers Market is back, which makes this Saturday seem like the unofficial kick off of summer. There’s also free ice cream, a flea market and a street festival to enjoy.
Free Ice Cream: Taza Chocolate will be dishing out free scoops of Maple’s Gelato in salted caramel and Mexican chocolate (made with Taza) from noon-3 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, at its store (561 Windsor St.). Maple’s is based in Portland, Maine, and uses fresh, local, organic ingredients. Pints of gelato will be for sale so you can take home your favorite flavor.
Union Square Farmers Market: It’s kick-off weekend at the Union Square Farmers Market, which runs every Saturday through November 17 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The market features vendors like Drumlin Farm, Kimball Fruit Farm, Jordan Brothers Seafood, 7ate9 Bakery, Fiore di Nonno, Seta’s Mediterranean Foods and Taza Chocolate. This week’s guest vendor is Quinn Popcorn.
Learn How to Compost: Head to the Growing Center at 22 Vinal Ave. on Saturday, June 2, at 2 p.m. to learn how to start a compost bin and recycle yard waste. Groundwork Somerville Gardens Coordinator and Growing Center volunteer Lee Dwyer will show attendees the basics of indoor composting, starting a worm bin and how to keep your compost healthy. There is a $5 suggested donation, all materials will be provided and be prepared to get dirty! (Update: Because of the rain, this event has been moved to Wednesday, June 6, at 6 p.m.)
Carnaval @ SomerStreets: The third annual series kicks off with Carnaval @ SomerStreets on Sunday, June 3, from noon-4 p.m. The program, which closes the roads to cars and opens them to walkers, bikers and dancers, will take place along East Broadway from Temple Street to Pennsylvania Avenue. There will be food, live music, craft vendors and so much more to showcase all of the great things happening in East Somerville.
Davis Square Flea Market: The grand opening of the Davis Square Flea Market is on Sunday, June 3, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the corner of Holland Avenue and Buena Vista Street. The market will feature vendors like Artifaktori Vintage (which also has a shop in Davis), Lady Luxe and Sand & Petal Co. selling clothing, housewares, curiosities and so much more.
Strawberry Dessert Festival: Throughout the month of June, some restaurants in the area will be serving strawberry desserts and donating a portion of the proceeds to Mass Farmers Markets. Somerville’s very own Highland Kitchen is participating and if my dozens of meals there have taught me anything, it’s that this dessert will be delicious!
