Weekend 6.19-6.21: Aeronaut Anniversary, Father’s Day & Summer Solstice

This weekend marks the official start of summer and there are plenty of events to help you celebrate a day we never thought would come in the dark depths of winter. In addition to our picks below, I recommend checking out one of Aeronaut’s many festivities in honor of its one-year anniversary. And don’t forget that you can start planning your weekend a day early when you get our guide to the weekend delivered to your inbox every Thursday. Sign up here for the Beat’s free weekly newsletter. Looking for more fun? Check out our calendar of events for a full listing of what’s going on in the ‘Ville this weekend and beyond.

Brooklyn Boulders Somerville Opening

Friday

Ice Cream at 3 Little Figs: I usually hit 3 Little Figs for breakfast, but on Friday the Highland Ave. shop is opening for a special event featuring in-house made ice cream that you can enjoy as a sandwich with fresh cookies or with espresso as an affogato. The fun starts at 6 p.m. and goes until supplies run out, so get there early. Ice cream for dinner anyone?

Water Gun Fight: Now that you’ve got a good sugar high from all that ice cream, cookies and coffee, head down to Brooklyn Boulders Somerville for a Water Gun Fight. That’s right, the climbing gym is giving you a chance to relive the summer fun of your childhood on Friday night with squirt gun duels and water balloon tussles. Yeehaw!

Squeezebox Slam 2015 Lady Kielbasia

Saturday

Joe’s Jazz & Blues Fest: We enjoyed a few hours of afternoon relaxing last weekend at the Squeezebox Slam and can’t wait to do the same on Saturday at Joe’s Jazz & Blues Fest. Head to Powderhouse Park (AKA Nathan Tufts Park) from noon-6 p.m. to hear the sounds of the Somerville High School Jazz Ensemble, The Busted Jug Band, Somerville Symphony Orkestar, The Makanda Project, Peter Ward and Electric Blues and the Either/Orchestra with Teshome Mitiku. (Pro tip: Hit the Union Square Farmers Market in the morning to pick up picnic supplies for an al fresco lunch.)

Community Vault: A Screening of Local Videos from the Last Several Decades: If film is more your thing, head to the Davis Square Theatre on Saturday afternoon for a SCATV screening of clips from community TV stations and local filmmakers. Expect public service announcements, retro dance parties and lots of local flair!

AR Sylvester Baxter Riverfront Park

Sunday

Father’s Day Brunch: Celebrate dad with brunch (Brass Union and Foundry on Elm have specials in honor of the day)! We’ve got the guide on where to find the best morning or mid-day eats and drinks in Somerville to help you show dad just how much you care.

Summer Solstice: Celebrate the official start of summer with several solstice-themed events happening in Somerville. Bow Street Yoga is hosting a three-session (though you can drop in for just one) Urban Solstice Retreat on Saturday and Sunday. Canceled:  You can also welcome the season at Assembly Row’s free Summer Solstice Yoga on Sunday evening. Take in a Journeys in Sound Summer Solstice concert at the Arts at the Armory or “A Summer Solstice” jazz concert at The Green Room in Union Square, both on Sunday.

  1. The Community Vault screening sounds really cool! Its amazing how much media gets created and forgotten about on the reg. Very cool that someone was able to dig around in the archives and curate this program.
