Weekend 8.17-8.19: SomerStreets & Rock and Roll Yard Sale

We’re well into the dog days of summer and this weekend promises lots of seasonal fun in Somerville. There are wine and beer tastings tonight, an ice cream tasting and Elvis Costello tribute tomorrow and Sunday brings the third SomerStreets event and the Rock and Roll Yard Sale. And don’t forget about the farmers markets on Saturday, which are absolutely chock full of delicious, fresh, local fruits and vegetables right now. With all that on tap, there’s truly something for everyone to enjoy around the city over the next few days!

Beer and Wine Tastings: There are a whole bunch of free beer and wine tastings going on around town tonight, August 17. Ball Square Fine Wines & Liquors hosts a dry riesling tasting from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Sav-Mor Spirits on McGrath Highway will provide samples of malbec and moscato from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. And Downtown Wine & Spirits in Davis Square hosts an Enlightenment Ales tasting from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. and a Vineyard Road wine tasting from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. Dave’s Fresh Pasta will be pouring samples of an Italian white wine and a pear cider from France from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. And don’t forget that Night Shift Brewing in Everett is open to the public on Saturdays from noon-5 p.m. for tours and tastings. Somerville Mobile Farmers Market: The Somerville Mobile Farmers Market travels around town on Saturdays bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to various neighborhoods. The market accepts EBT, SNAP, WIC, farmers market coupons, cash, credit and debit cards. Find the Mobile Farmers Market at the Mystic Housing Development (530 Mystic Ave.) from 10 a.m.-noon, Glen Park (Glen and Oliver Streets) from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. and Clarendon Hill Housing (North Street/Powderhouse Blvd./Alewife Brook Parkway) from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. (also on Thursdays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Somerville Council on Aging Activity Center, 167 Holland St.).

Union Square Farmers Market: Open every Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., the Union Square Farmers Market has tons of locally grown and produced vegetables and fruits, bread, fish, meat, flowers, eggs and sweet treats. If you can’t make it to the Saturday market, be sure to check out Swirl & Slice on Thursdays from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. in Union Square or the Davis Square Farmers Market on Wednesdays from noon-6 p.m.

FoMu Ice Cream Tasting at Taza Chocolate: FoMu, an all natural, nondairy ice cream produced in nearby Allston, will be at the Taza Chocolate Factory on Saturday, August 18 from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. providing samples of its limited edition flavor made with Taza Chocolate. Stop by to try some and pick up a pint to take home!

For the Sake of Song: A Tribute to Elvis Costello: Arts at the Armory will host For the Sake of Song, an event that brings local musicians together to play original material and pay tribute to the musicians who have influenced them. This Saturday, August 18, Patrick Yerby, Laura Grill and Shadwell will perform their own songs as well as Elvis Costello classics. Doors are at 7:30 p.m., the show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $8.

SomerStreets Going Green on Rt. 16: This Sunday, August 19 brings the third event in the SomerStreets series, this time on Route 16 (Alewife Brook Parkway) from Dilboy Stadium to Broadway. During this unique event, the streets are closed to vehicle traffic and open to pedestrians for walking, biking and dancing. There will be free swimming at the Dilboy Pool, soccer with the Boston Breakers, an arts and crafts fair, chalk art, food, entertainment and more. This weekend’s SomerStreets event runs from noon-4 p.m., rain or shine.

Rock and Roll Yard Sale: This Sunday, August 19, the Rock and Roll Yard Sale takes over Union Square from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Come down to browse through a massive selection of vinyl records, CDs, cassettes and 8-tracks in addition to audio gear, music magazines and silk-screened posters. Listen to some great tunes while perusing vintage clothing and craft vendors and munching vegan snacks. (Rain date: Sunday, August 26.)

Holland Street Closing: MassDOT is scheduled to install a raised crosswalk on Holland Street at the Davis Square T station beginning Sunday, August 19 and ending Wednesday, August 22. The Buena Vista parking lot will remain open, but no traffic will be allowed onto Holland Street between Winter and Dover streets.
