Weekend 8.3-8.5: Dance Show, Circus & Jazz Jam

It’s difficult to believe that it’s already August … where does the time go?! But as with other summer weekends in Somerville, there’s lots of fun to be had around town over the next few days. The Armory has a dance performance tonight and tomorrow and a jazz jam on Sunday, there’s a circus performance on Saturday and don’t forget about the farmers markets!

Mythos:Pathos Preview Performance: Experience art and dance at the Armory this weekend with a gallery exhibit and performance by Luminarium Dance. The work, called Mythos:Pathos, examines lesser-known characters and storylines in Greek mythology from a modern worldview. The gallery opens at 7:15 p.m. and the performance is at 8 p.m. on both Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4. Tickets are $15 ($12 for students and seniors).

Wine Tasting: Stop by Ball Square Fine Wines & Liquors on Friday night from 4:30-7:30 to sample the August wines of the month for free. This is the last tasting until September, so don’t miss it!

OPENAIR Circus: Come down to Nunziato Field this weekend to see a performance under the big top! OPENAIR Circus is a Somerville nonprofit that offers classes and workshops that culminate in a show to be performed on Friday, August 3 at 7 p.m., Saturday, August 4 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 5 at 2 p.m. There is a $3 per person suggested donation for the two-hour show.

Somerville Mobile Farmers Market: The Somerville Mobile Farmers Market travels around town on Saturdays bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to various neighborhoods. The market accepts EBT, SNAP, WIC, farmers market coupons, cash, credit and debit cards. Find the Mobile Farmers Market at the Mystic Housing Development (530 Mystic Ave.) from 10 a.m.-noon, Glen Park (Glen and Oliver Streets) from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. and Clarendon Hill Housing (North Street/Powderhouse Blvd./Alewife Brook Parkway) from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. (also on Thursdays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Somerville Council on Aging Activity Center, 167 Holland St.). Union Square Farmers Market: Open every Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., the Union Square Farmers Market has tons of locally grown and produced vegetables and fruits, bread, fish, meat, flowers, eggs and sweet treats. This week’s market features cultivated and wild mushrooms, music by Animal Farm and circus yoga for kids from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. If you can’t make it to the Saturday market, be sure to check out Swirl & Slice on Thursdays from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. in Union Square or the Davis Square Farmers Market on Wednesdays from noon-6 p.m.

The Davis Flea: Davis Square is hosting a flea market on Sundays during the summer from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. where you can buy vintage and antique goods, clothing, jewelry and much more. New vendors, like Barismo Coffee, are being added all the time!

Jazz Jam Session: Arlington-based Morningside Music Studio is hosting a jazz jam session on Sunday, August 5 at the Armory from 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. After Morningside’s student jazz combo kicks things off, all will be welcome to participate (bring your instruments and charts if you’re a vocalist). The event will feature craft beers and wine and is $6. If you’re looking for more fun this weekend, head down to the new M3 restaurant just outside of Davis Square for some tasty Southern cuisine. Or perhaps you need to satisfy your sweet tooth? Somerville-based cookie bike-delivery business Sweet Idea can help with that! And if you’re looking to escape the city for a bit, head north to Salem where you can eat well, take a trip back in time and experience some great art.
