Weekend and Beyond: Events for 12.27-1.1

Like many of you, I’m using this holiday week to soak up some vacation time with friends and family. I’m hoping to hit the slopes, enjoy a meal or two at Somerville’s terrific restaurants and make it out to some of the events listed below. In lieu of the usual weekend post, I’ve compiled a small list of events happening during the next several days that caught my eye. And of course, if you’re looking for more fun stuff to do in Somerville every night of the week, I’ve got that covered right here. Have fun out there!

Somerville Winter Farmers Market: The Somerville Winter Farmers Market is open this and every Saturday through March 29 from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Arts at the Armory (191 Highland Ave.). See photos from opening day at the market here.

Threadbare: Stop by the Washington Street Art Center (321 Washington St.) this Saturday from noon-4 p.m. to see the gallery’s current show, Threadbare, featuring new work by Melissa Falco, Lauren Leone and Courtney McKenna.

Making Comic Sense of 2013: The Year in 90 Minutes: Just over the border in Arlington, the Regent Theatre (7 Medford St.) hosts Jimmy Tingle for a performance of Making Comic Sense of 2013: The Year in 90 Minutes. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $25 for general admission in advance, $30 on the day of the show and $35 if you want to attend a post-show meet-and-greet with Jimmy and enjoy appetizers at Tango. There is free parking available.

Toast the New Year with Taza Chocolate and 90+ Cellars: Get ready for New Year’s Eve at Taza Chocolate (561 Windsor St.) on Sunday from 3 p.m.-6 p.m. by sampling prosecco and moscato from 90+ Cellars.

Monday, 12.30

Beer Geek Mondays: The end of Monday Night Football brings a close to 25-cent wing night at Olde Magoun’s Saloon (518 Medford St.). But your Mondays won’t be dull for long because Magoun’s is starting Beer Geek Mondays where the bar will tap limited, hard-to-find craft beers. Head over tonight at 6 p.m. for the inaugural event!

New Year’s Eve Dinner at True Bistro: Teele Square’s True Bistro (1153 Broadway) is offering a special four-course fixed-price menu on New Year’s Eve. Featuring items like a wild mushroom phyllo purse with truffled white bean puree and Italian greens as well as hazelnut chocolate beignets with hot chocolate and candied citrus, the dinner costs $65 ($90 with wine pairing). Reservations are available every half-hour from 5 p.m.-9:30 p.m.

New Year’s Eve at Highland Kitchen: Ring in 2014 with Highland Kitchen on Tuesday as they serve both their regular menu as well as some festive drink and dinner specials from 5 p.m.-11 p.m. After dinner, stick around for The People’s Karaoke, which starts at 10:30 p.m. and goes until 1:45 a.m. No reservations and no cover.

New Year’s Eve Dinner at Casa B: Union Square’s Casa B (253 Washington St.) is offering a special five-course fixed price menu on New Year’s Eve. Featuring dishes like lobster stew empanadas, braised eggplant in a white wine sauce with coconut rice and rum cake with strawberries and whipped cream, the dinner costs $65 (the wine pairing is an additional $35). Reservations are available at two seatings, between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and between 8:15 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.

Slutcracker: The Slutcracker burlesque show has its last show of the season at the Somerville Theatre (55 Davis Square) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25. The show is sold out.

New Year’s Eve Party at Spoke Wine Bar: Ring in 2014 at Spoke Wine Bar (89 Holland St.) with passed hors d’oeuvres, a cocktail of your choice, a champagne toast, party favors and good times. The party starts at 10 p.m. and costs $35 in advance or $40 at the door. Space is limited so reservations are recommended. The party is sold out.

New Year’s Eve at The Independent: Join John Funke as he DJs at The Independent (75 Union Square) from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. on New Year’s Eve. No cover, just good music, good food and good company.

“The Great Escape” New Year’s Eve Party: Olde Magoun’s Saloon (518 Medford St.) is hosting “The Great Escape” New Year’s Eve Party with “no cover, no cheesy band, no lousy DJ, no annoying noisemakers, no silly hats, no stupid songs, no guilt-ridden resolutions, no champagne toast and no amateurs.” The bar will be open until 2 a.m.

New Year’s Hangover Buffet: Olde Magoun’s Saloon (518 Medford St.) hosts a New Year’s Day Hangover Brunch from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Wednesday. Enjoy all-you-can-eat whiskey-soaked French toast or mac and cheese with kielbasa for $14.

New Year’s Day Brunch: The Independent (75 Union Square) is open for brunch on New Year’s Day from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Come down to dine on house made maple bacon doughnuts, a full Irish breakfast or sweet potato biscuits with sausage gravy.

Grand Union Flag Raising: Join the parade at City Hall at 11:30 a.m. or meet it atop Prospect Hill at noon for the Grand Union Flag Raising. This festive annual event, which takes place on New Year’s Day, commemorates Somerville’s role in the Revolutionary War. It’s old-fashioned fun for the whole family and a great way to kick off the new year.

So Fresh and So Clean Workshop: Bow Street Yoga (34 Bow St.) hosts a class on Wednesday from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. that mixes yin, vinyasa and meditation. Kick off the new year by letting go of anything lingering from 2013 and get ready for 2014 in this two-hour workshop. The class costs $25.

So Fresh and So Clean Cleanse: After the workshop is over, Bow Street Yoga hosts its first meeting of the So Fresh and So Clean Cleanse, which runs from January 5 to January 11. The seven-day Ayurvedic-based cleanse focuses on whole, unprocessed foods, herbs and spices. The first meeting, from 6:15 p.m.-7 p.m. on Wednesday will provide an introduction to the cleanse as well as a shopping list for what you’ll need to perform the cleanse. The cleanse costs $160 ($120 for returning cleansers, $100 for current health coaching clients) and an unlimited one-week yoga pass can be added for $20. The final meeting will be held on Saturday, January 11 from noon-1 p.m.
