Giving Tuesday Somerville: Give Local

It’s probably pretty clear to anyone who reads the Somerville Beat that I seriously love this city. I consider myself really lucky to have lived here for the last seven years during which Somerville has transformed from an off-the-beaten path destination to one of the hottest spots in the area.

One of the main things that drew me to Somerville when I first moved here was the people. We pack a lot of diversity into a really small area and instead of the city feeling fragmented, it’s probably the most community-minded place I’ve ever lived.

People here take care of each other, whether it’s providing shelter and meals through the Somerville Homeless Coalition, helping those start the next chapter of their lives with fresh clothing through Second Chances or ensuring that local, independent businesses are supported through Somerville Local First.

I consider it a privilege to live in a place as amazing as Somerville and as a resident, I’ve gotten personally involved in several local nonprofits. And this holiday season they, and other Somerville nonprofit organizations, are asking for your help.

Fifteen groups working to improve our city and the lives of residents have teamed up for Giving Tuesday Somerville: Give Local, a global day of fundraising that these organizations have localized to focus on our community.

Giving Tuesday Somerville takes place on December 2 and is being hosted by Somerville Community Access Television (SCATV Channel 3) as a good, old-fashioned telethon from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. But since it’s the 21st century, you can also donate online.

The telethon is being hosted by comedian Jimmy Tingle and will feature a great program of live entertainment, expert panel discussions, public service announcements and appearances by local celebrities. Giving Tuesday Somerville hopes to raise $50,000 to support the work of the local nonprofit community. The participating organizations (listed below) will divide the final funds equally among themselves.

Community Action Agency of Somerville
