I remember clearly the first time I went to Sacco’s Bowl Haven about five years ago. The ceiling was crumbling in places and there wasn’t much in the way of food or drink beyond a few vending machines, but my friends and I had a blast attempting to master candlepin bowling.
A few years later Flatbread Company, a mostly regional chain of pizza restaurants, took over the space, turning it into a bowling alley, bar and wood-fired pizza place. Since then, I’ve been to Flatbread/Sacco’s dozens of times and really enjoyed every visit.
Flatbread is very devoted to using organic, local ingredients when possible and this is evident starting with the robust beer list that contains many small breweries that call New England home. The first time I ever tasted Pretty Things Jack D’Or (and immediately fell in love) was at Flatbread and I’ve since discovered other delicious beers while having dinner there.
I usually start every meal at Flatbread with the organic salad. You might be thinking, a salad is a salad is a salad, but that just isn’t the case at Flatbread. This one is always so fresh and a bit unique, as it is topped with seaweed and sesame seeds, which really up the flavor. You can also add blue cheese from Massachusetts or goat cheese from Vermont (both are excellent) to make this already great salad even better.
The wood-fired pizzas come two ways–some have tomato sauce while others are sauce-free. I am a huge fan of the Coevolution (kalamata olives, rosemary, red onions, goat cheese, roasted red peppers and mozzarella) and one of my best friends swears by the Somerville Community Flatbread (tomato sauce, caramelized onions, mushrooms, mozzarella and parmesan cheese). There are also two flatbread specials each week, one with meat and one without, that are usually full of creative flavor combinations.
If the organic salad and flatbreads listed on the menu don’t appeal to you, you can make your own by selecting from an extensive list of ingredients. For an extra fee, Flatbread will make your pizza with a gluten-free crust. And don’t forget about the bowling! The lanes tend to fill up quickly, so get there early to secure one, especially on the weekends.
In addition to serving up delicious wood-fired pizzas, local beers and fresh salads, Flatbread gives back to the Somerville community on Tuesday nights when a portion of the proceeds from the evening goes to a different local organization.
