How to Spend Valentine’s Day in the ‘Ville

Happy Valentine’s Day Somerville! You may already have plans for today, perhaps you’re even going to one of the restaurants I highlighted as romantic spots to dine a few weeks ago. But if your calendar is still open, never fear. I’ve got some ideas on how you can spend Valentine’s Day in the ‘Ville (and slightly beyond the city limits).

Special Class at Bow Street Yoga: Today at 9:30 a.m. Bow Street Yoga (34 Bow St.) hosts a special class to benefit V-Day, a global nonprofit that works to end violence against women. The suggested donation is $15 and all proceeds will be put toward V-Day’s mission. And after yoga, head down the street to partake in the next item on the list!

Donuts cover

Union Square Donuts Opening: Head to Kitchen Inc. (201 Somerville Ave.) today to snag fresh yeasted Union Square Donuts in a variety of flavors, like chocolate-chipotle or maple-bacon, for you and your sweetie. The new shop, a collaboration between Culinary Cruisers and City Chicks/Homemade Modern will be open today from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Nibble Book Celebration: The Somerville Arts Council brings its Union Square-focused cookbook to Porter Square Books tonight for an evening of delicious food and related stories. The event takes place from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. and will include people involved in the Nibble book, like cocktail king Brother Cleve, sharing their stories and will feature some tasty nibbles (think doughnut muffins) that were featured in the book.

Somerville Rising: The organization One Billion Rising (founded by Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues) is holding a flash mob in front of J.P. Licks in Davis Square at 7 p.m. tonight to demand an end to violence against women and girls. Women from the community will speak about their experiences and all are invited to walk out, dance, rise up and demand an end to all forms of violence.

HK Inside

Special Menu at Highland Kitchen: One of my favorite restaurants (and I mean favorite ever, not just in Somerville), Highland Kitchen, is rolling out some pretty special dishes in honor of Valentine’s Day. There’s a lobster bisque, house-cured duck prosciutto and warm chocolate cake on tap for diners tonight.

Eat Oysters at Daddy Jones: Magoun Square’s newest bar and restaurant will have $1.50 oysters tonight in honor of Valentine’s Day. So come on down to 525 Medford Street to get your fill of this reported aphrodisiac.

Try the New Burro Bar: The Painted Burro in Davis Square has expanded into the former Spike’s Junkyard Dogs space next door to create the Burro Bar. The new eatery, which opened just this week, will focus on craft cocktails and beers, with dinner served nightly and lunch on the weekends.

Go to the ICA for Free: Every Thursday, the Institute of Contemporary Art is free from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. And with the This Will Have Been: Art, Love and Politics in the 1980s exhibit on view for only a couple of more weeks, this is the perfect time to visit.

What are your Valentine’s Day plans? I’m headed to the American Repertory Theater to see The Glass Menagerie!
