Thank you to everyone who has signed up for the Beat’s forthcoming event picks newsletter! We’re working on the finishing touches for next week’s launch. And if you haven’t signed up yet, you can get the newsletter here. It’s perfect for those who like to get a jumpstart on planning (it goes out on Thursdays) and have information delivered right to them. And for those who prefer to read websites instead of newsletters, we’ll still be publishing our weekend event picks here every Friday. For now, here are this weekend’s picks–and don’t forget that you can find a full listing of events on our calendar.
Friday
Hyper-Local Craft Brewfest: If you love local craft beer, this event is for you. With a plethora of area breweries (as well as cider- and mead-makers) on hand, attendees get to try a variety of beverages, many of them made with ingredients native to New England (like oysters or cranberries). The fest happens in three sessions (one on Friday, two on Saturday) at the Arts at the Armory, and while all are fun, Friday night offers a special Beer on Cask Tasting. Plus, last year we met former Bruin Shawn Thornton there, so you never really know what you’ll find.
Leading Ladies Concert Series with Amy Black: Head to Johnny D’s on Friday (or Saturday) night to hear singer-songwriter Amy Black as she releases her third studio album, The Muscle Shoals Sessions. Black will be bidding farewell to her Boston roots as she takes the next step in her journey and moves to Nashville. The Leading Ladies Series was designed to support and celebrate women in music.
Saturday
Squeezebox Slam: Now in its fifth year, the Squeezebox Slam is a celebration of accordions, button boxes and other free reed instruments that takes place on Saturday afternoon. From noon-3 p.m. music-makers are invited to take to the streets and head to Davis Square, where Lady Kielbasia will kick off three hours of musical acts. This is accordion anarchy and it’s not to be missed.
Bread & Salt at Cuisine en Locale: Join the team behind the forthcoming Juliet in Union Square for a pop-up at Cuisine en Locale. Bread & Salt Hospitality will be serving food inspired by recent travels to Spain while raising money for the new eatery. And whether you attend or not, you can contribute to Juliet’s Kickstarter and nab great perks like a custom apron, a catered dinner or chance to be a lobsterman for a day.
Sunday
Nibble Open Kitchen: Pop-Up Market & Tasting Event: Sample your way around the world at the Nibble Open Kitchen on Sunday at Kitchen Inc. The culmination of the Somerville Art Council’s entrepreneurship workshop for immigrants “So You Want to Run a Food Business,” attendees will get to taste food native to Venezuela, India, Brazil, Columbia, Sudan and Mexico. Delicioso!
Revels FRINGE: Revels presents its second FRINGE program designed for audiences who want to see and hear what’s happening at the edge of the folk process. This Sunday’s event brings together singer/banjo player Sam Amidon and Celtic harpist/vocalist Maeve Gilchrist for an evening of traditional and edgier musical performances.
